The USA has announced that it is imposing new and “severe” sanctions against Russia, condemning the “fraudulent” annexations of territories in Ukraine.
“The US today condemns Russia’s fraudulent attempt to annex parts of the territories in Ukraine,” US President Joe Biden said in a statement, speaking of a “violation of international law that violates the Charter of the United Nations.”
The US president also assured that the US “will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to regain control over its territory”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the annexation of four Ukrainian territories under Moscow’s control in a Kremlin ceremony during which he criticized the West and called on Kiev to lay down its arms.
In a stern warning, the US also announced that it will sanction – in agreement with the G7 countries – “any country, individual or entity” that will provide political or economic support to Russia’s attempts to “illegally” appropriate territories in Ukraine .
“We are also issuing a clear warning supported by G7 leaders: we will hold accountable any individual, entity or country that provides political or economic support to Russia’s illegal attempts to change the status of territories in Ukraine,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement. – a separate release.

EU reaction

The leaders of the 27 EU member states “rejected” and “condemned” Russia’s “illegal annexation” of four Ukrainian regions (Donetsk, Lugansk /east/, Kherson and Zaporozhye /south/) in a statement, in which they accuse Moscow that it “endangers world security”.
“We do not and will never recognize the illegal ‘referendums’ that Russia organized as a pretext for this new violation of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, nor the falsified and illegal results. We will never recognize this illegal annexation”, states the statement of the leaders of the 27 member states of the EU bloc.
“These decisions are null and void. Crimea, Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk and Lugansk belong to Ukraine,” adds the 27.
“We call on all states and international organizations to unequivocally reject this illegal annexation,” the statement issued shortly before the annexation documents were signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The EU also denounces the deliberate undermining of international order and endangering global security, according to the same text, which states that the EU will tighten sanctions to increase pressure on Moscow.
“We will strengthen our restrictive measures to counter Russia’s illegal actions. These will further increase the pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression,” the statement added.
EU leaders reaffirm “Ukraine’s right to defend itself against Russian aggression in order to regain full control over its territory and to liberate the occupied territories within its internationally recognized borders”.
The EU will continue to offer Ukraine “solid economic, military, social and financial support as long as it is necessary”, the 27 insisted in their statement.

The Council of Europe “firmly condemns the decision of the Russian Federation”

At the same time, the leaders of the Council of Europe, an organization guaranteeing human rights on the continent to which Russia is no longer affiliated, condemned Moscow’s “illegal annexation of occupied territories in Ukraine”.
“The Council of Europe strongly condemns the decision of the Russian Federation to proceed with the illegal annexation of the territories it currently occupies in Ukraine”, said in a joint statement the President of the Committee of Ministers of the Council, Simon Coveney, the Secretary General of the European organization, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, as well as the president of the Parliamentary Assembly (APCE), Tiny Kox.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is to address APCE via video conference during its next session, expected to take place on October 10-14, the institution announced in a statement.
“The forced change of international borders to the detriment of another sovereign state and the so-called ‘referendums’ that preceded it constitute a serious violation of international law and cannot be recognized,” the document states.
