In Rome, far-right leader Giorgia Meloni and her coalition allies met with President Sergio Mattarela. They claim that they are ready to form a government as soon as possible.
The president is expected to ask Meloni to become prime minister.
Giorgia Meloni, head of the “Brothers of Italy” party: “The delegation, made up of the leaders of all the political forces of the center-right coalition, met with President Mattarella and agreed on the need to give this nation a new government, as soon as possible, because the emergencies we face are many. Both at national and international level. The entire coalition proposed to the president of the Republic that I be the person in charge of forming the new government“.
The head of the “Brothers of Italy” party, Giorgia Meloni, is on course to become the first female prime minister
The head of the partyBrothers of Italy”, Giorgia Meloni, is set to become Italy’s first female prime minister and first far-right leader since World War II
Giorgia Meloni, head of the “Brothers of Italy” party: “We are ready because we want to get down to business as soon as possible“.
Meloni was keen to reassure Italy’s Western allies that nothing would change after his coalition came to power. “The government that I intend to lead, will support the position of NATO and the Western alliance, or it will not be at all“, stated Giorgia Meloni, bluntly. This after her alliance partner, veteran Forza Italia party leader and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, was recorded in the Senate making controversial comments about the war in Ukraine.
Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy: “I think Zelensky, I can’t say what I think about him. Unless there is strong intervention, this war will not end. The other risk we have is that in the Western world, these days, there are no leaders, there are no leaders in Europe, there are no leaders in the US. There are no real leaders“.
What a gift Berlusconi received from Vladimir Putin
Berlusconi also spoke about the gifts he received on his birthday, when he turned 86 at the end of last month, from “the friend“Vladimir Putin.
Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy: “I personally cannot express my opinion, because if someone shares it with the media, it can cause a disaster. But I’m very, very, very worried. I’ve gotten back in touch with President Putin, more or less. He sent me 20 bottles of vodka and a very sweet letter for my birthday. I responded with 20 bottles of Lambrusco and an equally sweet letter. (Putin) declared me the first of his five true friends“.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov: “I cannot confirm that there were such gifts. Therefore, I cannot say anything on this matter“.
Berlusconi later said that his comments had been taken out of context, stressing that his and the party’s position “Forza Italy” no different from that of the government.
The European Commission notified Berlusconi that the gift violates European sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. But the application of sanctions depends on each individual state, so the Italian authorities have the last word in this case.
