At the end of July, warships of the Russian Navy entered the Adriatic Sea and allegedly tried to block the exit of the American aircraft carrier “Harry Truman”. The Russian ships would have reached Ancona.
Three weeks ago there was a so-called “congestion” in the Adriatic Sea. Specifically, Russian warships entered the Adriatic Sea and would have arrived along the Italian coast to Ancona, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the head of the Italian Supreme Defense Staff, revealed in an interview with the daily La Repubblica. quoted by Croats from Index.
La Repubblica noted that on July 22, Russian ships blocked the entry-exit route of the Adriatic Sea to try to prevent the US aircraft carrier “Harry Truman” from moving. This led to a huge increase in tensions and a series of maneuvers by NATO and Russian ships in the area.
Russian cruiser, less than 100 kilometers from an American one
La Repubblica writes that the NATO commanders reacted immediately to the Russian movements in the Adriatic Sea, who wanted to show that they will not give up control over the passage from the Ionian Sea to the Adriatic Sea. At the end of July, the Russian cruiser “Varyag” (photo article) it was less than 100 kilometers from the American cruiser “Forrest Sherman”, the Italians write.
These ships were on the sides of Cape Santa Maria di Leuca, the Russian ship on the Adriatic side, and the American ship on the Ionian side. A little further south was the aircraft carrier “Harry Truman” with its American escort.
Immediately, the US aircraft carrier was joined by NATO ships from Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and the US. All of these formed a square around the aircraft carrier on July 25.

Croatians at Index sent an inquiry to their country’s Ministry of Defense to find out if it is aware of the activities of Russian and NATO ships in the Adriatic Sea.
“Croatia is constantly monitoring and following the situation and is in contact with allies and partners. Through the Naval Operations Center, the Croatian Navy monitors the situation in the Adriatic Sea, mainly in its area of responsibility. This primarily concerns the navigation of foreign naval vessels.
Based on the above, the MRH Command is aware of the presence, i.e. the navigation of Russian Federation ships in the Adriatic Sea. Given that no vessel was observed entering the territorial sea of the Republic of Croatia, there was no reason to react“, the Ministry of Defense told Index.
“If they had fired a missile, they would have been sunk immediately”
“No one has ever managed to block an aircraft carrier, so I think the Italian colleagues are also exaggerating“, said military analyst Ivica Mandic for Dnevnik Nova TV.
“Nothing particularly unusual for warships to come and watch the other side’s exercises, this is kind of provocative in that they come so close but not a threat, especially to the carrier strike group“, Mandic said.
“I think this is a distraction from something important happening right on the ground in Ukraine“, he specified.
Mandic calls the Russian move into the Adriatic a stupid operation.
“These ships, if they had fired a missile of any kind, would have all been sunk at that moment. You are in a narrow sea called the Adriatic and you are simply attacked by NATO member countries whose shores are surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, you are in a sandwich“, Mandic said.
He assures that the Croatian Armed Forces have a clear picture of both the Adriatic and Russian ships, as well as the possibility of defense in the event of a threat. He reminds that even Truman on the Adriatic is no accident.
The action of the Russians is not taken seriously
Security expert Gordan Akrap told HRT that this action should not be taken too seriously.
“This is a regular activity of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, whether they are air or naval forces, trying to make contact with NATO forces in order to test the organization, efficiency, mobility and command, control and leadership system of the NATO alliance and member countries of the NATO alliance in crisis situations“, Akrap stated.
He added that we often see such cases in the Baltic Sea, that is, in the North Sea, and in Norway, and now we also see them in the Adriatic Sea. He pointed out that this sea is very well protected – it is protected by Croatia, partly by Albania and Italy.
