Macron denounces the “brutal attack” in Ukraine and urges the French to “accept to pay the price of freedom”

Emmanuel Macron denounces the “brutal attack launched by Vladimir Putin” in Ukraine and urges the French “to accept to pay the price of freedom”, after speaking on the phone with the Kremlin leader, reports AFP, writes

“I am thinking of our people, who will need the strength of soul to look ahead to the times that are coming, to resist the uncertainties, ease and hardship, and united to accept to pay the price of our freedom and our values”, declared Macron on Friday evening, during a ceremony to mark the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Bormes-les-Mimosas, in Var, on August 17, 1944.

“After the brutal attack launched by Vladimir Putin on February 24, the war returned a few hours from our border, on European soil,” he emphasized, after talking on the phone with his Russian counterpart on Friday.

The two leaders vowed in favor of terminating “as soon as possible” a mission of international experts to the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, under Russian control, the target of repeated bombings, which fuel fears about a “new Chernobyl”.

In “this war that thunders at our gates”, Emmanuel Macron hailed the “heroic resistance” of the Ukrainian people against the “terrible assaults of the Russian army and its agents”.

“Yes, the ghosts of the spirit of revenge, the flagrant violations of the sovereignty of the states, the intolerable contempt of the peoples, the imperialist will reappear from the past to impose themselves in the daily lives of our Europe, our neighbors, our friends”, he denounced.

It will be a difficult winter

Macron has already warned the French about a difficult autumn and winter, in an interview on the National Day of France, due to the risk of energy shortages and the “explosion” of prices, induced by the Russian War in Ukraine.

He then accused Russia of using natural gas as a “weapon of war”, by delivering supplies, in response to tough European sanctions targeting it, and urged the “collective entry into a logic of energy sobriety”.

The Russian giant Gazprom announced on Friday a new interruption of natural gas supplies to Europe for three days due to “maintenance”, fueling fears of a shortage in the European Union.

Emmanuel Macron – who has been on leave at Fort Brégançon, in the commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas, since July 29 – and Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne are expecting a socially complicated autumn due to the general increase in the cost of living.

They are to return to Paris on Wednesday, when the first Government meeting of the autumn takes place, in which several delicate reforms regarding unemployment insurance and pensions are to be addressed.
