The Belarusian president accused Poland and Lithuania on Monday of preparing “terrorist” attacks and a “military rebellion” in Belarus.
Initially, Aleksandr Lukashenko accused only Ukraine of such intentions, when he announced during Monday morning the deployment of a “regional” military group together with Russia, according to AFP, quoted by Agerpres.
“The training in Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine of fighters, including Belarusian radicals, to commit acts of sabotage, terrorist acts and a military rebellion in the country becomes a direct threat,” he said during a meeting with senior security officials from Minsk.
Lukashenko’s accusations against the US and the EU
“The United States and the European Union say that they will legitimize our fugitives as a political force, they plan to seriously strengthen their support for destructive elements and aggravate the situation on the western (Belarusian) border in order to open a second front there.” added Lukashenko, according to statements quoted by the press service of the Belarusian presidency.
Consequently, Minsk and Moscow will deploy a joint military group, he indicated, without specifying the place of its deployment.
“Yesterday (Sunday), through unofficial channels, we were warned that a strike from Ukrainian territory on Belarus is being prepared,” Lukashenko said, assuring that Ukraine wants to make “a Crimea bridge number 2”, referring to the damaged Russian bridge Saturday by an explosion.
The message of the President of Belarus to Zelensky
He said he sent a message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging him not to touch “his dirty paws even one meter of Belarusian territory”, according to AFP.
“If you want peace, prepare for war”, President Lukashenko also said, also stating that “there must be no war on the territory of Belarus”.
An ally of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, Belarus made its territory available to the Russian army for the offensive against the neighboring state, but the Belarusian army has not participated in the fighting on Ukrainian territory so far.
The entry of Belarusian forces into the territory of the neighboring country would mark a new escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, according to the cited source.
The response of the European Union after Lukashenko’s statements
The European Union categorized as “ridiculous” Lukashenko’s accusations that the authorities in Kyiv were planning an attack against Belarusian territory and urged Minsk not to get involved in the war launched by Russia against its neighbor, according to EFE.
“We take note of the false accusations by the Lukashenko regime that Ukraine is planning an attack on the territory of Belarus,” Peter Stano, spokesman for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said at the daily press conference at the European Commission. .
“They are completely unfounded and ridiculous accusations, absolutely unacceptable,” he added.
Stano emphasized that “Ukraine is here the victim, not the aggressor”, asking Minsk to take into account the fact that the neighboring country is under “a brutal illegal attack, in violation of the United Nations Charter and international law”.
“We urge the regime in Minsk to refrain from any involvement of Belarus in this brutal and illegitimate action,” he said, asking it “to stop allowing Belarusian territory to serve as a launching pad for airstrikes,” among which included the recent missile and drone strikes against Ukraine.
Lukashenko said that after a meeting of CIS heads of state last week held in St. Petersburg, he had a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two agreed on the deployment of a joint armed group of the Russian State Union- Belarus. He also said that the formation of this group has already begun, without giving further details.
