Laws of Justice, approved by the Government. Cătălin Predoiu: The guarantor of the independence of prosecutors and judges

The government approved, in Wednesday’s meeting, the package of justice laws.

Thus, the Government approved the Draft Law on the status of judges and prosecutors, the Draft Law on judicial organization and the Draft Law on the Superior Council of Magistracy.

Before the government meeting, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă declared that the process in which this package of laws was developed represents an example of maturity and responsibility for all the institutions involved.

The Head of the Executive expressed his conviction that, once the approach is completed, we will manage to get out from under the control and verification mechanism and also be able to facilitate the decision that all Romanians have been waiting for, for so long, the decision to integrate into the Schengen Area.

“It’s an approach that took place over the last few months and has materialized in an activity that is as consistent as possible. We all know the debates of recent years, which have generated both critical and favorable opinions, I believe that the process in which this package of laws was developed represents an example of maturity and responsibility for all the institutions involved”, said the prime minister, according to News.ro .

Cătălin Predoiu: The guarantor of the independence of prosecutors and judges

The three draft laws of the Justice are the “guarantee” of the independence of prosecutors and judges, stated Minister Cătălin Predoiu, at the opening of the meeting of the Ciucă Cabinet, notes Agerpres.

“The Laws of Justice – the law on the status of judges and prosecutors, on the judicial organization and on the status of the CSM – are fundamental for the careers of judges and prosecutors, the functionality of our courts and Prosecutor’s Offices, but also of the CSM, the guarantor of the independence of the Judiciary according to the Constitution, in my opinion, the most imported institution in this “constellation” of institutions that have attributions in the judicial system. These three laws are fundamental for Justice and this probably also explains the difficulties in recent years regarding the crystallization of some projects to improve and the heated debates that have always accompanied the discussion of projects amending the Laws of Justice”, explained Predoiu.

Opposition reaction

USR deputy Stelian Ion criticized the draft laws of the Justice, claiming that they “strengthen” the political influence and consolidate the “power of the anti-reformist network” in the judiciary.

“Cătălin Predoiu tied the stone around the neck of the independent Justice, and the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition is preparing to throw it into the water. Today it seems that the Justice laws will be approved by the Government led by a plagiarist, of which the OUG craftsman is also a part 13. Then they will be sent to the Parliament for debate and adoption. After the slaughter of these laws in the Dragnea era, they should first of all be corrected and, moreover, modernized. The amendment of these laws is a milestone of the PNRR and should enter into force until July 2023. The problem is that, instead of being corrected and modernized, these laws in the Predoiu version do nothing but strengthen the political influence on the judiciary and strengthen the power of the anti-reformist network created right inside the judiciary”, he wrote on Facebook , former Minister of Justice.

He added that, during the debates in the Parliament, USR will use all legal and political means to “diminish the negative impact” of these laws on Justice.

“It took Predoiu 9 months since he returned to the leadership of the Ministry of Justice to ‘definite’ some projects that were already drafted, discussed, debated. Another nine months to implement some reforms and to hand over justice The system with epaulettes and the ferocious retrograde groups in the CSM. With such changes to the Justice laws, there is no chance that the MCV will stand up on its merits,” the deputy claimed.
