Recommendations for citizens to be especially careful, considering the wave of bad weather this evening, the Civil Protection makes recommendations.
Firefighters are asking the public to ensure they take precautions against the dangers of severe weather, given the temporary deterioration of the weather this evening into Monday afternoon (05-09-2022).
We specify that, according to the emergency weather bulletin issued today by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the weather will temporarily worsen from tonight (09-04-2022) until the afternoon of Monday (09-05-2022), with locally heavy rains and thunderstorms in northern and central Greece, accompanied by a high frequency of lightning, hail and strong wind gusts during the phenomena.
Greece, under the empire of storms
In particular, in areas where heavy rains, storms or wind gusts are forecast, the Civil Protection recommends citizens:
– Secure objects that can cause damage or injury if caught in bad weather.
– Make sure gutters and downspouts in homes are unclogged and working properly.
– Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rain and for several hours after the event ends.
– Avoid work and outdoor activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather phenomena (risk of lightning strikes).
– Take shelter immediately during a hail storm. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until you are sure the storm has passed. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.
– Avoid crossing under large trees, under signposts and in general from areas where light objects (eg pots, broken glass etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (eg under balconies ).
Follow the instructions of relevant local authorities such as traffic police etc.
Civil Protection, recommendations for the population
Also, in areas where there is intense lightning activity:
If you are at home
– Do not hold electrical appliances or the phone in your hand, as lightning can pass through the wires. Do not carry electrical appliances, as lightning can pass through the house or the power grid.
-Avoid touching sanitary pipes (kitchen, bathroom), as they are good conductors of electricity.
If you are in the car
Park it on the side of the road and away from trees that could fall on it.
-Stay inside and turn on your warning lights (emergency lights) until the storm subsides.
-Close the windows and do not lean on metal objects.
-Avoid flooded roads.
If you are outdoors
* Take shelter in a building or car, otherwise immediately lie down on the ground without lying down.
* Take shelter under the solid branches of low trees if you are in a forest.
* Never take shelter under a tall tree in an open area.
-Avoid low-lying areas due to the risk of flooding.
-Do not stand near poles, power lines, telephone lines and fences.
-Do not go near metal objects (eg cars, bicycles, camping equipment, etc.).
– Away from rivers, lakes or other bodies of water.
-If you are in the sea, get out immediately.
-If you are isolated on a flat surface and feel your hair stand on end (indicating that lightning is about to strike), sit down deep with your head between your legs (to minimize body surface area and contact with the ground ), throwing any metal object you have on you.
Consequently, according to a statement from the fire brigade, the operational plan for the management of flood risks and their associated phenomena is being implemented, and fire services in areas where flooding is expected to occur have been placed on high alert and escalation, if necessary, to deal with any problems immediately.
At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) within the Ministry of Civil Protection and Climate Crises, informed the government departments involved, as well as the regions and municipalities in the country, in order to be in a state of increased civil protection preparation, for to immediately deal with the effects of the onset of severe weather phenomena.
For information and announcements regarding the existing situation and the permeability of the road network, as a result of the inflow of water, citizens can access the website of the National Police www.astynomia.gr.
