The equipment worth 100,000 euros allows genetic testing and personalized therapies for all children and adults with leukemia in Romania.

A public utility organization, Give Wings focuses on innovation in pediatric oncology services

The Fundeni Clinical Institute, in partnership with Asociația Dăruiește Aripi, is carrying out, starting this month, advanced genetic testing for children and adults with leukemia in Romania. They allow the correct classification into risk groups and the application of the latest international protocols, after 2020. The equipment worth 100,000 euros was donated to the Donate Wings Association Institute.

It is the first time that rare subtypes of acute leukemias that require a different and personalized therapeutic approach can be identified in Romania.

The manager of the Fundeni Clinical Institute, Prof. Univ. Dr. Anca Colita, pediatric onco-hematology primary physician, stated:

“Dăruiește Aripi Association continues its active involvement in pediatric onco-hematology in our country by equipping the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Fundeni Clinical Institute with new, super-performing equipment. It will contribute to a personalized therapeutic approach that will increase the chances of survival of children and adults with acute leukemias.

In our laboratory, tests will be done for all patients in Romania. Our medical team thanks both the Donate Wings Association and its supporters and donors for the wonderful initiatives undertaken”.

The President of the Donate Wings Association, Alina Pătrăhău, believes that “the purchase of this equipment is an important step in the personalized treatment of children with cancer in Romania at Western European standards. Approximately 400 children are diagnosed annually in Romania with various forms of cancer, the most common being leukemias and lymphomas, over 50% of cases, according to the National Registry of Childhood Cancers”.

In the Laboratory of Special Hematological Analyzes in the Fundeni Clinical Institute, more than 250 patients with leukemia, children and adults, are diagnosed annually.
