Fake Russian-German millionaire Anna “Delvey” Sorokin, who inspired a Netflix series, has been released from prison.
Juda Engelmayer, a spokesman for Anna Sorokin, confirmed the release in an email to CNN late Friday.
“She will remain under ICE surveillance, but will be able to fight deportation” said John Sandweg, former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who is part of Sorokin’s legal team.
Immigration Judge Charles Conroy cleared the way for Sorokin’s release earlier this week, setting her bail at $10,000 and requiring her to follow certain conditions. Among them: not to be active on social media and to remain at the same residential address 24 hours a day while her case continues.
The judge’s ruling also said ICE can use an ankle bracelet to track Sorokin.
She was in ICE custody for 17 months, according to her attorney, at the Orange County Correctional Facility in upstate New York.
“We are grateful that the court ruled that her detention is not necessarySandweg said in a statement on Friday.
Sorokin was released from prison in February 2021 after serving nearly four years on theft charges. But it wasn’t long before she was back behind bars.
ICE took custody of Sorokin on March 25, 2021. In November, the Board of Immigration Appeals granted an emergency stay in her case, according to ICE. She fought her deportation — and also joined a group of plaintiffs who sued the agency earlier this year, alleging they requested and were denied Covid booster shots while in custody. They dropped the lawsuit in March after receiving the vaccines, according to court filings.
While she was detained, frequent posts were made on Sorokin’s social media accounts.
Earlier this year, an attorney representing Sorokin told NBC News he feared deportation when he could not reach her, but news later emerged that she was still in ICE custody.
Soon after, Sorokin spoke from behind bars on the podcast “Call Her Daddy”, stating that she never claimed to be a German heiress.
“I was from Germany, which was true, but no one ever asked me about my jobSorokin said. “No one asks who your parents are and how much money they make. It is simply outrageous“.
She told host Alex Cooper that “he never told senseless lies“.
But she admitted, in a way, that she lied about her status and background.
Sorokin also said that she was surprised by the public’s fascination with her story.
“It was a surprise to me that people would be so interested in the way I approached things because it made so much sense to me.she said.
Of German nationality and born near Moscow, Anna Sorokin alias Anna “Delvey”, aged 31, capable of crafting elaborate lies, presented herself as a German heiress with a fortune of 60 million dollars, which allowed her to obtain tens of thousands of dollars in loans from several banks.
From November 2016 to August 2017, she traveled for free on private jets, lived in mansions in Manhattan, without ever paying for anything, according to a New York court that estimated a 2019 flight at $275,000.
The daughter of a driver and a Russian functionary who emigrated to Germany in 2007, the young woman, who arrived in New York in 2013, had even tried to obtain a loan of 22 million dollars to launch an exclusive club in Manhattan.
Her incredible story seduced television producer Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy“, “Bridgerton“), which included her in a month-long mini-series on Netflix, “Inventing Anna”, starring Julia Garner. According to the specialized press, Anna Sorokin would have received 320,000 dollars from the streaming giant.
