Spain: One million free passes for train travel
Almost one million people in Spain have obtained a free subscription for regional and metropolitan train travel, as part of a program introduced to support purchasing power, the Madrid Government announced on Monday, reports AFP.
“Today we reached the figure of one million free subscriptions to Renfe”, the national railway company in Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced during a meeting with members of his party.
The figure, almost twice as high as the one announced when this measure came into force, at the beginning of September, “confirms the warm reception of this measure by users”, appreciated the company Renfe in a press release .
The measure, which is predicted to remain in force for four months, concerns metropolitan trains in large urban centers such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Seville, but also medium-distance trains. The objective is to support the purchasing power of Spaniards, significantly affected by the acceleration of inflation, and to encourage them to give up their own cars to use public transport.

The railway company Renfe estimates that the measure will save 118 million liters of fuel and avoid the emission of 360,576 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Asked by the press, the Spanish Minister of Transport, Raquel Sanchez, said on Monday that she is thinking about introducing structural measures to encourage the use of public transport even after December 31, 2022.
Free train travel in Spain. 100% discounts: Who benefits from free tickets
Starting September 1, free train tickets are offered in Spain. The governments of several states of the European Union, as well as regional or even local authorities, launched this summer in a real race to lower the prices of tickets for public transport, including rail. Germany set the tone and then France and Spain followed.
Spain offers free train tickets for passengers traveling on short and medium routes with distances of up to 300 kilometers. The measure will be in force until December 31, 2022, in an attempt to help the population more easily overcome fuel price hikes.
The new measure aims to encourage the use of trains and is valid for journeys operated by Cercanias, Rodalies and Media Distancia, especially for short and medium distances, up to 300 kilometers. It should be noted that this facility does not apply on long-distance routes, nor on the AVE, AVANT and AVLO high-speed lines.
The Spanish government recently approved a 30% discount on all public transport, including the metro, buses and trams.
The 100% rail discounts will apply to journeys with multiple journey tickets on cercanías (commuter services) and media distancia, or medium distance routes (less than 300 km). The measure is mainly aimed at Spanish season ticket holders, but tourists could take advantage of it if they bought multi-journey tickets.
“I would like the people of Spain to know that I am fully aware of the daily difficulties that most people face,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Tuesday. “I know wages are covering less and less and it’s difficult to make ends meet.”
The price reductions are implemented to mitigate the impact of inflation and rapidly rising energy prices.
“This measure encourages the use of public transport to guarantee a safe, reliable, comfortable, economical and sustainable means of daily commuting amid the extraordinary increase in energy and fuel prices,” the Spanish Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
